Muddy Muddy Water-words and music by Luke Vassella 2017
In the last days of March 2017
The rain fell around Lismore the likes we've never seen
It turned to muddy water
Some people were ready, some were unprepared
Some stayed and tried to fight, some were running scared
From the muddy water
See when Debbie'd finished Queensland she came down to do her worst
Poured a witches brew around us as if the town was cursed
With muddy water
That Lismore levee held the deluge until it reached the top
But the storm raged down the valleys and boys she wouldn't stop
Hey, Hey, Hey, muddy muddy water
Just like Jesus said the rain falls on the wicked and on the righteous too
The good, the bad, the rich, the poor, there's nothing you can do
To stop that water
Down Keen to Woodlark into Molesworth and on to Magellan St
Lismore city went down in the flood, no escape, no retreat
From the muddy water
You could hear the choppers chopping in the sky over your head
As the swollen rolling river carried the living and the dead
Filthy muddy water
Even the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull came to see the damage done
He got down on his hands and knees like he was trying to help someone
Hey, Hey, Hey, muddy muddy water
People everywhere were working trying to keep their faces brave
To salvage for tomorrow, whatever they could save
From the muddy water
Then somebody shouted, "Suspend our foreign aid!"
Made the man sound bankrupt, just like a puppet being played
It'll make you sick, Kev don't drink the muddy water
My friend you can axe the tax and stop the boats and blow smoke around the room
But to clear the mud dumped on this country, you'll need more than a broom
Hey, Hey, Hey, muddy muddy water
Now there's rubbish piling higher on the side of every street
We're all in it one way or another from our eyeballs to our feet
Muddy water
Maybe we'll build a bonfire to burn against the night
But if we lift that levee higher, we better build it tight
That's right you got to help a brother, got to help a sister too
If we can't look out for each other, we're not going to make it through
So people lift it higher and take it to a higher shelf
And pray to God it's not too late to help your climate and yourself
Hey, Hey, Hey, muddy muddy water
You might say you've been delivered
You might say that you've been damned
But when the deluge beats the Lismore levee
All God's children stand in muddy muddy water
I'm talking about the last days of March 2017
